What are Meta Roles?
When using Meta in your server, there are 3 essential roles you need to understand: the Meta role, the Meta Mute role, and the Moderator Rank you choose during setup.
While it might seem simple, the way these roles are ordered in your server's hierarchy is critical for Meta to function correctly. We recommend reading this guide before setting Meta up.
The Three Roles
Meta Mute
Created automatically once setup is completed. Meta Mute is assigned to users who trigger the Anti Mod Grief or Malicious Bot Scanner systems. Meta edits each channel, ensuring users with this role cannot see, type, join, or interact in any way — including viewing the member list, so they can't DM anyone. This is far more effective than Discord's built-in timeout feature.
Moderator Rank
Chosen by the server owner during setup. This is the role that Meta monitors 24/7. Users with this rank are watched closely — if they abuse their permissions, Meta takes action. If a user does not have the Moderator Rank, Meta will not intervene if they cause harm. Choose a role that every trusted staff member has, or create a new one.
Role Structure
For Meta's protection to work, your roles must be ordered correctly in your server's role hierarchy. Here's the required order:
⬆ Higher in Discord's role list = more powerful
Why Does Order Matter?
Discord's permission system is hierarchy-based — the higher a role sits, the more authority it has. This directly affects Meta's ability to protect your server:
Meta Mute Must Be Above Moderator Rank
If Meta Mute is below the Moderator rank, it won't have any effect on the griefer — the Moderator rank would overwrite Meta Mute's restrictions because it's higher in the hierarchy. This makes griefing possible even with Meta enabled.
Meta Must Be Above Both
Meta's own role needs to sit above both Meta Mute and the Moderator Rank. Without this, Meta cannot assign the Meta Mute role to offenders — Discord blocks roles from managing other roles that outrank them.
If you run into role-related errors, check the video tutorial that comes with the setup message or any error prompt. It walks you through the exact steps visually.
